Comedy Xmas Shows Are Coming to Town

All around Melbourne the comedy venues are putting together Christmas shows with more laughs than you’ll find in any Christmas Cracker. We put together a list and you can check it twice. These are all the Christmas shows we know about, coming to Melbourne this December, including some exciting live podcast recordings.

THE BELLA UNION BAR

The Bella Union Bar is in a Seriously Festive mood and has a lot of Christmas cheer to offer. Comedy wise there are three main offerings.

A Swinging Bella Christmas 

This will be a musical comedy show with MC Casey Bennetto and his co-host being comedy chanteuse Geraldine Quinn with their band the Bella All Stars. On Thursday 18th the special guests will be Alan Brough and Mike McLeish and on Friday the special guests will be Tripod so you can no doubt go to both and are pretty much guaranteed a sensational time.

THE BUTTERFLY CLUB 

What The Dickens!

Travel back in time to 1851, to Victorian England and the great age of discovery and storytelling. Created from your suggestions, tales of sweet-hearted heroes, sickly orphans, bumbling constables and winsome ladies are woven into a new, unique Dickensian tale every night.

Play parlour games like Poor Pussy, the Laughing Game and join Melbourne’s finest improvisors for mince pies and some Christmas cheer in the wonderful ‘curiosity shoppe’ that is The Butterfly Club.

Anne Edmonds : It’s Eddo!

Eddo steps away from character sketch in this year’s show ‘It’s Eddo!’ and into stand up about herself, her life, and the weird and whacky world around her. Yet Eddo still explores through her stories some aspects of Australian archetypes; and like her previous work there is more than a song or two.

Not minutes into the performance Eddo had the audience chanting ‘Failure’; which in no way dented her jubilant personality or the mood of the audience. Failure, death and being alone were themes dealt with throughout the performance, and yet the mood of the audience never once erred from sheer joy.

Eddo plays effortlessly with tension and release; with themes of humiliation and redemption. Her tales of her family, relationships, and life more broadly take us to places of cringe and relatability but then carries us safely to a place where we can howl with laughter and avoid expensive counselling bills after the show.

Eddo’s songs are awful. In a great way. Eddo’s first song is called ‘The Longest and Worst Song of All Time’. But that steals due credence to the other songs in the set. I’ve never witnessed an ambush encore before. Those things should come with warnings. Eddo’s musical abilities are terrifyingly joyful and joyfully terrifying.

It is rare to see a comedian this relaxed and in control on stage. It was a real treat. Eddo disarms her audiences instantly and we feel none of the ‘could this go wrong?’ tension you might get in other shows. Eddo is a true professional – this is a good show for the risk averse comedy goer. This is a deeply enjoyable experience. You’ll leave this show surprised, delighted, and a little bit disturbed. You couldn’t ask for much more from a night out at the Comedy Festival. Eddo is a furious force for good and a ripping delight to spend an hour with.

The Experiment

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been wondering for years why there is not a comedy show that is also a dog show. It’s such a hassle trying to attend both all the time. Why not bring them together? Well, lucky for us, our prayers have been answered by ‘The Experiment’. Hosted by Asher Treleaven, Geraldine Hickey and the constantly-grinning Oliver Clark, the late-night show is the perfect opportunity for comedians to get weird.

The trio of hosts complement each other perfectly. Hickey was wonderfully deadpan, giving us some animal facts and reading out a very pertinent letter to our new Minister for Women’s Affairs, Tony Abbott. Clark manned the sound effects and ran interference, dressed like an electric-blue nightmare – the lovechild of Tony Barber and Tony Clifton. Treleaven bridges the divide, holding the reins and fostering an enthusiastically supportive atmosphere that ensures the special guests are met with rapturous applause, regardless of the material they try out.

On the evening I attended there were four guests, all of which were fantastic. Anne Edmonds performed some great new material about Nazi fancy dress, Dave Callan busted some serious moves to Britney Spears’ ‘Hit Me One More Time’, Claire Hooper treated us to a suite of Fables from her upcoming Fringe show and Charles Barrington delighted with his tale ‘The Ugly Natalie Portman’. Alas, on this evening there was no dog show. A lady in the audience did bring a small toy dog, which Treleaven received with the disdain it rightfully deserved.

‘The Experiment’ is brilliantly unhinged and a great chance to see some comedy from the stranger end of the spectrum. With new guests every night, it’s certainly a show that I’m going to check out a few more times. A really great way to top-off your night at the Fringe.

A final note- the call-out for small dogs is entirely serious, so bring your small dog if you have one. As of right now, the prize money has jackpotted to $45. Hot dang!
