Australians at Edinburgh Fringe 2022

The 75th Edinburgh Fringe Festival begins this week and, after a bit of an enforced break, there will be a strong contingent of Australian acts (as well as Aussie Expats and adopted Aussies) back in Auld Reeky town raring to tread the boards again. Here is a list of those we could find along with any reviews we have previously written.

Our British Correspondent Ron will be seeing a whole slew of shows and reviewing them for us.

To all those performers in Edinburgh, Chookas from The Squirrels and have a wonderful Fringe.

Danielle Walker – Nostalgia

Reviewed by Bren Carruthers

There’s a feeling you’re being welcomed into Danielle Walker’s home as you walk in to see her show Nostalgia, with a set mimicking the dated dĂ©cor of a family home and family photos flicking across a TV screen. But when the giant, two-thousand dollar, customised Billy The Bass that adorns the wall welcomes her on stage, you can be reasonably assured that plenty more absurdity will follow, in a playful marriage of the familiar and the bizarre.

Transplanting a tiny slice of Australiana to the stage at Comedy Republic, Danielle regales us with anecdotes drawn from her family in and around Tully in North Queensland. From smelling bigfoot to (literally) digging your own grave, the stories still somehow retain a kernel of relatability despite their off-the-wall outlandishness.

Danielle is one of those few gifted people that can make you chuckle with just a twitch of their face, and these stories would have nowhere near the impact if they weren’t delivered with such expressive incredulity – even though she freely admits that she is just as ridiculous as they are. It is just one of many small, attentive details that lift a good show to the level of a great one – one that is well worthy of its nomination for the Festival’s Most Outstanding Show.

At a time when many people are only just beginning to reconnect with family members post-covid, whether interstate or overseas, Nostalgia strikes a particularly poignant chord. It’s a loving celebration of the Australian family – some, like Danielle’s, are far more ridiculous than others, but we love them all the same.

Danielle Walker performs Nostalgia is on at Comedy Republic until April 24

Danielle Walker: Myths and Legends

By Jess Welch

Last year’s best newcomer award winner Danielle Walker is back with another wonderfully unique show, Myths and Legends. Walker brings stories from her life, along with her distinctive artwork, which is familiar to all who have seen her. It’s a fun and light show that almost everyone can enjoy.

While the tales of Myths and Legends are interesting, it’s the tales from her life that really make the show. The stories of her family and boyfriend are captivating and paint a vivid picture, not unlike the pictures she employs during the show. Her method of storytelling is incredibly engaging. Some of the stories are outrageous and fantastic and others are familiar of every family. The night I was there, so was her boyfriend, which she referenced as she told one specific story, that he apparently doesn’t like very much. I can see why, but that only made it funnier for the rest of us, even as it made us cringe.

The art that always accompanies Walker’s shows is bright, bold and fun and allows her to tell jokes and stories that she otherwise wouldn’t be able to or wouldn’t work nearly as well. However, it is used sparingly, and to great effect. The pictures can sometimes elicit laughs on their own, but they also lend a useful hand to visualising her tales in a way that only makes them better. With the art being displayed on a large TV screen, there are occasionally technical hiccoughs, but Walker plays them off to laughs. Even the progression of the show format is used for joke fodder and it works incredibly well.

Walker laughs along with the crowd, which could be annoying in another comic. But Walker gets away with it and makes the show feel like a joint experience, rather than distant comic and audience. This works well in the smaller room, but I can equally see Walker adapting it to a much larger space just as easily.

There are some more adult themes addressed, but not in a crude or uncomfortable way. It genuinely feels as though we are following the stories of her life, rather than her using sex for laughs. It’s refreshing and brilliantly done.

Overall, Walker is still on the rise. I’m excited to see what she can do within the next few years.

Myths and Legends is on at the Victoria Hotel. See website for details

Melbourne International Comedy Festival Awards for 2018

This year instead of being presented in the middle of the night at the Festival Club as is traditional, The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Awards were instead presented at 1pm in the afternoon at Belleville. It was more relaxed and civilised with drinks and nibblies (and better lighting for photos) and it was great knowing that everyone in the room was involved and invested in the results, but sort of sad that it was restricted to invite only. I was very lucky to be invited, but other fans on the rim of the festival, but just as invested would have been sad (as I was when this happened once in the past) to not be a part of that middle of the night wild excitement and joy when a favourite, or someone you’ve discovered wins an award.

I can’t deny that there was some surprise as well as delight for Sam Campbell’s win. Although he has been performing in Sydney for a while and getting some TV work (you may have seen him on The Checkout), he’s still pretty much under the radar of the general public. We fell in love with his work when we saw Zanzoop! early in it’s run in 2016 and spent the rest of the Festival telling anyone who would listen that they should go and see the strange talk show hosted by a wise cracking alien in a back alley nightclub. This year we loved both shows he was involved with; his own, The Trough and Anne Edmond’s Helen Bidou – Enter the Spinnaker Lounge where he played Helen’s long suffering, very awkward son Connor.
