Radio Variety Hour

By Colin Flaherty

At the tail end of the golden age of radio, the Radio Variety Hour soldiers on. We were privy to the back stage / off-mic banter between the cast (bickering about the onset of television) and saw them transform to all smiles once the microphones were switch on. The looming domination of the cathode ray tube gave them the opportunity to make some jokes about modern day technologies and the arguing was the basis for a subplot involving the cast’s lives away from the studio. The main focus of the show was the radio show segments with their hilariously out-dated sponsorship announcements, amusingly antiquated moralities and some good old fashioned audio drama with plenty of laughs thrown in.

Being a radio program our attention was on the wonderful vocal performances and inventive sound effects. Una Broben (played by Lauren Bok) handled the parts of a feisty detective with film noir stylings, a strangely alluring alien cat and a creepy “children of the corn” type child with brilliant confidence and style. Bert Maverick (Bert Goldsmith) handled announcing duties with faux authority and played a comically stoic space captain (a combination of Futurama’s Zapp Brannigan and Captain Kirk) with consummate ease. Johnny Ray styled crooner and wannabe teen heartthrob George Hunt (Ben Vernel) belted out a hilariously soppy over-sung song and played a wonderfully evil crime boss (ala Peter Lorre).

It was interesting to see that they didn’t employ a dedicated person to franticly generate the foley, instead each actor took turns in using the props to bring the stories to life. Popped balloons, punched lettuce and tin can echoes added to a pre-recorded soundtrack to tell these hilarious stories in a fun, chaotic manner. We even got laughs when devices didn’t make the appropriate noise and the performer attempted to explain it away.

The script was witty with charming period phrasing and amusing word play. It was fun to see the cast throw in left-field comments, not necessarily to make the others corpse but to cover mistakes. These minor errors would have passed by the audience unnoticed if they hadn’t drawn attention to them but they added some extra lunacy nonetheless. There was the odd stifled giggle but they were able to recover quickly and dive straight back into the script. All were very expressive in their radio performances both vocally and physically, and even included the odd visual joke for the in-studio audience.

We laughed, we cheered and were regularly on the edge of our seats. This was a fun hour of nostalgia with brilliantly constructed stories to enthrall all ages.

Radio Variety Hour is on at the Lithuanian Club until October 5

Sitcom Theme Song Singalong (and Trivia) – Bert Goldsmith

By Lisa Clark

If you grew up enjoying sitcoms and singing along with theme songs like Family Ties, Laverne & Shirley and Cheers this is the show for you. It’s a great show to grab some friends and some drinks from the bar and have a great late night of singing, calling out answers to questions and winning lollies.

The bones to the structure of the show is a list of Top 10 most popular Sitcom themes, (clearly voted for by Americans unfortunately, but that’s OK). Each song pops up on the video screen throughout the show with words underneath Karaoke style and the audience is encouraged to sing along. The audience is a little shy at first but by the end no one wants to stop singing and we’ll even sing a song that’s not in Bert’s plans. Between the singing Bert gave us some lots of trivia and zingers, other sections of the show included ‘Real Sitcom or Fake Sitcom?’, ‘Who’s The….am I?’ and ‘the ‘Most Boring Sitcom Character of All Time’

Bert Goldsmith is a quick witted nerdy host who knows his stuff when it comes to sitcoms. He had all bases covered for a great night of exploring television sitcoms. Whether you’re into oldies or more recent shows there was something for all ages. He had lost his side kick Rosie because she broke her foot and is doing a spiffing job at running the show solo as well as doing all the teching. It’s quite a tech dependent show and after a slight glitch during our performance it occurred to me that it might be a good idea for Bert to have back up cards and recordings
just in case. Still he has fabulous slides that he’s put a lot of work into and some very funny filmed skits. Well done to director Timothy Clark too for giving it some polish.

A great way to finish off a night of the Fringe, the audience didn’t want it to end. Maybe all those lolly prizes made us all a bit giddy! This show should come with a health warning for the risk of diabetes and being hit by flying objects. Lots of fun, it will definitely be one of my Fringe highlights; I recommend you make it one of yours too.

Sitcom Theme Song Singalong is on at The Imperial til Sept 27.

TWO) We have a lot of shows on every night. You can show up, and know something will be on. In fact, we only have two nights off for the whole festival (the first two Saturdays). We have shows starting on the hour, and we’ll have some discount drinks cards around for anyone who wants to come and hang out in between shows. We’re a comedy hub!

THREE) Whether you want to sing along to sit com themesongs, or shout abuse at Jesus Christ, we have a show for every taste! We also have a lot with zero audience participation, if the singing and heckling isn’t your style. The Imperial is a great place to take a punt on a new show. Our volunteers on the door can tell you all about the shows, and make recommendations based on your tastes. Sketch, poetry, standup, impro, storytelling, and whatever else you can think of.

FOUR) We are very generous. Head to our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/impycomedy) where we will be giving away tix and keeping everyone up to date on deals, whether tickets will be available on the door and of course, instagramming the hell out of the whole thing.

FIVE) The Imperial is a great place to observe comics in their natural habitat. Stick around after the show, have a beer with these kids, and you’ll be fast friends. Buy the beer, and you’ll have a friend for life.

The Imperial is one of the main Fringe Festival venues in Melbourne’s CBD at the corner of Bourke and Spring streets right near Parliament Station.
