5 Good Reaons to See What Would Spock Do?

1. It’s a rom-com – boldly going where no rom-com has gone before! To his friends, Gary Thompson is just like any other lad – football obsessed, likes a drink and not interested in anything nerdy – but underneath he is secretly a closeted Star Trek fan. He keeps these two worlds completely separate… that is until the day the girl of his dreams turns up to temp in his office, dressed like Mr Spock. What follows is a relationship comedy with an intergalactic twist, but will Gary learn to accept himself before he lets this chance for love slip through his fingers (which he’s obviously doing the Vulcan salute with).

2. You don’t have to be a Trekkie! The show has been loved by both nerds and norms at both the Edinburgh and Adelaide Fringes. It was called ‘A bittersweet story. Highly engaging.’ ★★★★★ by the Edinburgh Evening News, ‘A delight! Warm, funny and inspiring.’ ★★★★ by The Scotsman and Glam Adelaide said ‘You deserve to see this fun show: go book your tickets NOW.’ ★★★★★.

3. It’s a one man show – or should that be a one vulcan show? It’s performed by Sam Donnelly, star of the critically acclaimed Bunker Trilogy, which just won ‘Best Returning Production’ at the Adelaide Fringe, and the hit independent film The Return which was nominated for Best UK Feature at the 2015 Raindance Festival. In What Would Spock Do? Sam lights up the stage passionately espousing the virtues of Star Trek, playing a dozen different characters, and doing a fair bit of sweating too!

4. The writing is out of this world! Writer/director Jon Brittain is the award-winning creator of cult hits Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho – a big gay, drag, comedy, cabaret, musical extravaganza about the Iron Lady – Rotterdam, a critically acclaimed relationship drama that was nominated for Best New Play at the 2016 Off West End Theatre Awards, and was part of the writing team for season two of Cartoon Network’s BAFTA and Emmy Award winning show The Amazing World of Gumball. He’s also a massive Trekkie, so he knows what he’s talking about!

5. It’s about being yourself, no matter what other people think. Both Jon and Sam are massive Trekkies and the play draws on many aspects of their real lives. Both experienced bullying and hid their obsessions from friends, but both also learned to embrace their inner nerd. We all have something that makes us different, but as Mr Spock says ‘infinite diversity in infinite combinations’ or in other words ‘being differrent is good!’ To see if Gary will learn that lesson, make sure you don’t miss the hilarious nerdy one man rom-com What Would Spock Do?
