Australians at Edinburgh Fringe 2022

The 75th Edinburgh Fringe Festival begins this week and, after a bit of an enforced break, there will be a strong contingent of Australian acts (as well as Aussie Expats and adopted Aussies) back in Auld Reeky town raring to tread the boards again. Here is a list of those we could find along with any reviews we have previously written.

Our British Correspondent Ron will be seeing a whole slew of shows and reviewing them for us.

To all those performers in Edinburgh, Chookas from The Squirrels and have a wonderful Fringe.

Aussie invasion of 2018 Edinburgh Fringe

It’s not long now until the world’s largest fringe arts festival begins in warmer climes and again a massive contingent of Australians and expats are headed to The Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Many have traveled the Australian festival circuit and have been whipped into shape for international audiences. Some have been previously reviewed by Squirrel but remember they will have been further polished and may have been revised and reworked.

Hannah Gadsby

Last year Australian, Hannah Gadsby won Best Comedy at the Fringe, she’s had to cancel her Edinburgh Fringe run this year but there’s a lot more amazing comedy talent coming up from down under. If you are travelling anywhere near Edinburgh this August, have a look at the following list of shows and consider going to see an Australian act.

Anthony Jeannot – Rage Against The Man Child

By Elyce Phillips
Anthony Jeannot
When we’re young, we’re idealistic – confident that if we put our minds to it, we can be our best and achieve anything. As we grow older, it can be difficult to maintain that naïve positivity as we are increasingly confronted by our own limits and those of society. In Rage Against The Man Child, Anthony Jeannot explores what it is to grow up and look at our lives through the prism of our younger self. It’s a bittersweet show about losing your optimism and regaining it in unexpected ways.

Jeannot tells thoughtful and funny tales from his life. He strikes a good balance between idealism and reality, setting a tone that’s ultimately uplifting without being overly saccharine. There’s a nice flow to the show. Using three points from a letter he wrote to himself as a teenager gives Jeannot’s tales a framework, and adds a feeling of narrative to what could have been disparate stories. A piece about his current role working in social media for a teen clothing brand was a stand-out and hilarious.

Rage Against The Man Child isn’t super polished. There are still some visible nerves in Jeannot on the stage and his material can at times become meandering – more akin to casual conversation with a mate than structured storytelling. However, this also adds a layer of vulnerability to the show that’s in keeping with the theme. Jeannot’s comedy is relatable and self-effacing, and had the audience chuckling throughout. He can certainly hold the attention of a crowd.

This is a fine work of stand-up from an up-and-coming comedian. Jeannot is entertaining, witty, and you even get a showbag at the end.

Rage Against The Man Child is on at the Downstairs Lounge at The Grand Mercure Hotel until April 17

Squirrel Comedy’s Recommended and Previously Reviewed Shows at Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2015

By Lisa Clark

Well the Squirrels are getting ruffled up and ready for autumn nut collecting. And comedy reviewing. There are soooo many shows on offer at the 2015 Melbourne International comedy Festival and it can be very difficult for us to see everything we want to see, let alone review everything we want to review. For those readers who are planning their Festival schedules and are in need of help, we have some good news: Squirrel Comedy has previously reviewed thirty of this year’s shows and we have laid out links to all those reviews below.

First Up here are some brilliant shows I previously saw & loved but Squirrel Comedy hasn’t reviewed.

I recommend you see:Claire Hooper School Camp

Claire Hooper’s School Camp

Claire takes us back to school days in a raw & truthful way where nostalgia takes some surprising and dark turns that make this show very special.

Celia Pacquola – Let Me Know How It All Works Out.

Celia’s show about fortune telling and her international lifestyle was another of Celia’s crowd-pleasing corkers.
Celia Pac Let me Know

Barry Nominated last year as word got around it was selling out like hotcakes, so if you weren’t lucky enough to see this gorgeous show better book now.

Denise Scott – Mother Bare

Denise deservedly won the Barry Award last year for her droll and often riotous reflections on motherhood and other aspects of her comedic life.Denise Scott Mother Bare pic

She’s only doing four shows this year at the fan friendly time of 4.30 Sundays, so get your tickets early.

And now for shows that we have previously reviewed.

Particular highlights this year that I can also recommend include:

Are You Afraid of the Dark by Watson Watson Afraid of the Dark

Watson’s funny and occasionally genuinely scary show is not for those with a nervous disposition or heart condition but my goodness it is a monstrous load of fun. It can only fit smallish audiences into the space at the Old Melbourne Gaol so book early, I hear the first week is booking out fast. Not surprising as this show won Best Comedy at the Melbourne Fringe Festival and considering it is site specific it is one you will have to come to Melbourne to see.

Bart Freebairn Ultra Power LordBart Freebairn pic

Bart is a comedian at the top of his game just waiting to be discovered by the mainstream. I get the joyful shivers when I see a stand up comedian reach a point where they can host a room and own it keeping everyone rolling with laughter non stop. Bart is there and I hope everyone loves Ultra Power Lord as much as I did at Fringe last year.

Bucket’s List by Sarah Collins starring Justin Kennedybuckets list

Buckets List is a whimsical, beautiful and of course very funny tale with a star turn by the amazing Justin Kennedy (who we just don’t see enough of on the circuit any more – I miss him, but if this is the sort of work he’s producing then I’ll forgive his absence). Justin is blessed with the ability to make an audience laugh without saying a word and when I see independent theatre this good I think our major theatre companies should have a good hard look at themselves.

Damian Callinan – The Lost WW1 Diary of Private Paddy CallinanPaddy Callinan

A perfect show for this anniversary of ANZAC it’s another comedy character tour de force by Damian where truth and tall tales blur with loads of laughs and a streak of darkness. The true spirit of the ANZAC is thoroughly celebrated.

We can’t wait to discover new exciting comedy at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival  but meanwhile

Anthony Jeannot is Unaccept-a-bubble

By Elyce Phillips

Bubbles are magical things. We all have memories of playing with them as children, of how they can lift your spirits as they float in the wind. However, they are also fragile, impermanent, and destined to dissolve. In Unaccept-a-bubble Anthony Jeannot explores moments of helplessness and acceptance in his life via the metaphor of bubbles. The show is funny, sweet and uplifting, cleverly constructed around its theme.

Unaccept-a-bubble is a very personal show, but its subject matter will be familiar to many – health scares, relationship troubles, missions for self-improvement. Jeannot finds the humour in moments of crisis during his mid-20s, tying it all together with a beautiful and heartwarming message. The topics aren’t particularly ground-breaking, however, Jeannot offers a unique perspective with his personal honesty. There are moments where you don’t know whether to laugh or cringe, such as an excruciating tale of a girlfriend with some surprising personality flaws – and it’s with these kind of stories that Jeannot is at his best. His brutal honesty about ethical dilemmas was often hilarious.

Jeannot appears to be a little uncomfortable on stage, but his material is solid and kept the audience laughing. While he may not have the presence of a more seasoned performer, Jeannot has a knack for storytelling, and is endearing and relatable. It feels rather like you are catching up with a particularly funny friend who you haven’t seen in a couple of years. The mood worked well in the more intimate setting of a room at Tuxedo Cat.

Unaccept-a-bubble is a strong show from an up-and-coming comic. With material like this, Jeannot is only going to get better, and I look forward to seeing what he comes up with next. You can catch the last Fringe performance of this show tonight.

Anthony Jeannot is Unaccept-a-bubble is on at Urchin at Tuxedo Cat until October 5

5 Good Reasons to see Anthony Jeannot is Unaccept-a-bubble

1) There will be a bunch of kittens at the show. SERIOUSLY SO MANY KITTENS. KITTENS, Everywhere!

There will just be me, on stage, the audience and a whole bunch of adorable kittens. It will be awesome.

2) There will be puppies. OH MY GOD, so many puppies!

It’s going to be an hour, of me on stage, telling hilarious jokes to a room full of people who are laughing whilst intermittently playing with the cute puppies and kittens.

3) I’ll give you chocolate. BLOCKS AND BLOCKS OF DELICIOUS CHOCOLATE!

Picture it, me, on stage, with my jokes, while you enjoy chocolate and the company of dogs and kittens.

4) There will be bubbles… BUBBLES GUYS!

So, it’s me, on stage, telling my stories, with bubbles, chocolate, puppies and kittens everywhere.

5) I will be doing stand-up.

In fact, that’s the only thing that will be happening, no kittens, no puppies, no chocolates, no bubbles, just me with stories about near, near death experiences, love, possibly dating someone who is definitely racist and other things.

Oh, and there will be bubbles, that one wasn’t a lie.
